An open letter to the final year students I am to teach over the next few weeks.

Dear all this semester’s minor will be spent in molding and scolding and getting you to become the finest photographers you can be ... and if possible, higher in standards than anyone ever expected of you.

Over the years as a professional photographer, I have never come across any written material that defines what this profession may mean to some of us. So today I will try to share a collection of thoughts drawn together over time, which may help you along this five week journey taken together.

Photography is a path, a sequence of events to be lived and experienced, that helps you discover yourself and the people and places in your near and distant environments. It is not a fixed state of mind or being but an evolving medium, to take the edge off the weight some of us can feel in conveying our feelings, beliefs and desires. In short not all of us are verbal enough in putting into words any intense visual rush witnessed. Strangely in such moments of flight, high or low speech takes the backseat leaving us silent, hence opening the door to the next chapter which begins by saying - I don’t want to be left unheard, I need to share these endless waves of wakefulness...

We are most satisfied in expressing ourselves when we photograph subjects that give us a spiritual or an emotional rush. There is no traditional way of perceiving a subject, only diverse ways in which it may be experienced. What is essential is how the subject looks and feels to you, as you hope to capture & share this visual rush with the rest of the world. Ah! But in all honesty as you seek to do these magical moments justice, you realize this endeavor will last a life time. And the quest for more is far from ever being concluded.

So! Pick up this third eye and use it till your heart’s content - use this silent, outspoken, beautiful monochromatic, mechanical, time freeze, blink of an eye, depth of field, apertures, shutter speeds, bulb, slow-sync, and pain-in-the-neck thing we call a CAMERA”

Brief Course Outline ::.

In the final minor you are actively encouraged to pursue your own ideas and develop your own style and approach. Make a cutting-edge portfolio with a concerted concept that holds all images together. Within this portfolio you are allowed one or several series of images {shown as a part of the bigger whole} that holds your portfolio together. Try to execute and reveal your capabilities predominately as a  photographer; capable of shooting straight, as well as special effects photography in color, black & white or both. The overall feel of the portfolio may or may not have a commercial edge to it.

Submit a Personal Portfolio Project Proposal ::.

Using critical analysis, research, visual experimentation and exploration, define your minor project and its audience. There are several possibilities to consider as you progress—“Traditional” analog photography that requires the use of color or black & white film and chemical processing, to digital imaging & manipulation, and maybe experimental images with alternative photo processes. Subject matter can range from landscape, photo-journalistic, portraiture, abstract or commercial (product) photography, still life with food photography and countless other possibilities.

The Final Week Submission (Audio-Visual Still Photography Portfolio Presentations) ::.

You are required to prepare and present your photography work with a visual or conceptual theme in the form of an audio-visual presentation. Your 300 seconds of limelight can be just 20 images or more and your choice for audio can be live or recorded music or a narration. The photographs should work together as a group and should show evidence of your own personal style. The overall quality of the implementation and presentation of the work will have a considerable impact on the outcome of the grade.

After the presentation is over, your selected 20 images are to be submitted in a durable portfolio case, along with a CD containing the multimedia presentation, the 20 images from your prints portfolio in high-quality jpegs and 300 dpi tiffs. After the final critique, the printed portfolio will be turned in on the final day (confirm the date and time with your instructors)

Include an artist’s statement about the process and identify equipment used to generate the work. By the end of it, the student’s final portfolio should contain a statement and 20 selected images from the presentation as enlarged prints.
The recommended size of the images is A3 which is approximately 12 X 16 inches in the commercial photo lab. But you are allowed to vary between 10X12 as a minimum and 12X18 inches as the maximum size. Before you begin to put a portfolio together...... Ask yourself these questions: Does my portfolio look like the work of one photographer, is this a cohesive portfolio? / How can I best sequence my images? What format is best for my "look"?  /Catalog or list all of your images.

The Visual Journal ::.

 

Students must maintain this journal as part of their creative process. This will become a personal indication of your own photographic ‘escape’. The Visual Journal should contain:

::. A collection of ideas and inspirations
::. Documentation of your research into processes and content
::. Reviews, critiques, quotes, clippings, tear sheets.
::. An information sheet for each and folio assignment
::. Technical requirements and equipment used

 

Student Learning Program ::.

:: Week One ::.

Research for a concept and various techniques you want to experiment with. Try to create a unique viewpoint to your personal self expression in a pictorial mode. Alongside attending the instructor’s lectures and viewing of the educational documentary movies is mandatory.

:: Week Two ::.

Monday morning give in the written concepts of the projects to be executed over the coming weeks. Eat drink and sleep photography.

Intense studio or outdoor photography sessions begin

Intense studio or outdoor photography sessions ends

Bring it all together for your presentation, experiment with any software that you feel does justice to your work and add the finishing touches. Avoid doing any more photography unless absolutely necessary.
